Attracting Butterflies Using Aromatic Plants

Butterflies are attracted to colorful flowers. This is a well known fact. What is relatively unknown about butterflies is that they are attracted to aromatic herbs as well. Butterflies are in search of herbs not only for nectar but also to lay their eggs on.

Butterflies lay their eggs on the host plants and once the caterpillars hatch, they survive for a few days on these host plants. So, ensure you plant sufficient amount of herbs in your garden.

Before you decide on what herbs to plant in your garden, you need to find out the types of butterflies in your neighborhood. Here are some of the herbs which most of the butterfly species are attracted to.

Lavender is an excellent addition to your garden. You can plant it as a border. This herb needs partial sun and is easy to grow. Butterflies lay their eggs on this herb. Lavender is a delicious meal for caterpillars.

Fennel is another aromatic plant which butterflies are attracted to. These shrub like plants are a beautiful addition to your garden. Their lovely fragrance will spread all across your garden.

These herbs are just a few suggestions. To ensure attraction of butterflies, do a survey of the species of butterflies around your neighborhood and plant herbs accordingly. The advantage of planting herbs in your garden is that along with attracting beautiful and colorful butterflies, these herbs can be used in your kitchen as well.
